US Navy selling battleships USS Ohio and Kentucky according to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf dated 10 March 1923

An item dated Washington, USA 10th reported that the US department of navy received a tender to pay in cash 112.500 US dollars (1) for the aged battleship Ohio and 103.500 US dollars for the Kentucky.

1. Result of the Washington Naval Conference between November 1921-February 1922 signed by USA, England, Japan, Italy and France to limit the building of battleships, battle cruisers and aircraft carriers and to limit the possession of such capital ships by stopping completion of breaking up already existing.
2. Of the Maine-class consisting of the Maine, Missouri and Ohio, preceded by the Illinois-class and succeeded by the Virginia-class. The original design was changed as a response of the Russian battleship Retvizan to be built by WilliamCramp&Sons, Philadelphia, USA which would be 2 miles faster as the original Maine-class design/ The Newport News Shipbuilding&Drydock Company proposed to lengthen the hull with another 6,1 metres/20’ and 60% increase of the horsepower. The US Navy altered the design as a result. Laid down by Union Iron Works, San Francisco on 22 April 1899, launched on 18 May 1901, commissioned on 4 October 1904, training ship 1917-1918, decommissioned in July 1919, stricken on 31 May 1922 and sold to be broken up on 24 March 1923.
3. Part of the Kearsage-class consisting of the Kearsage and Kentucky designed for coastal defence purposes, preceded by the USS Iowa and succeeded by the Illinois-class. Building authorized on 2 March 1895, contract awarded on 2 January 1896, laid down at Newport News Shipbuilding Company, Newport News, Virginia, USA on 30 June 1896, launched by Christine Bradley on 24 March 1898, commissioned on 15 May 1900, decommissioned on 28 August 1909, modernisation completed in 1911, recommissioned on 23 June 1915, training ship 1917-1918, decommissioned on 29 May 1920, stricken on 27 May 1922 and sold to Dravo Corporation to be broken up on 24 March 1923. Building costs 4.998.119,43 US dollars.
