Board of experts recommended the Virginia battleship design according to the British magazine The Engineer dated 28 June 1901


An item reported that the Virginia battleship design was recommended by a board consisting of American naval experts. The ship had a displacement of 14.948 tons, a speed of 19 knots and a main armament of 4-12” guns, 8-8” guns and 12-6” guns.(1)

1. Virginia-class consisting of the New Jersey, Rhode Island, Virginia, Georgia and Nebraska. Preceded by the Maine-class and succeeded by the Connecticut-class. After the Spanish-American War became clear that if the US Navy wanted to operate abroad larger battleships were needed. Starting with designs based on the Maine-class design increased the displacement more and more in the developing process. Laid down by Newport News Shipbuilding on 21 May 1902, launched on 6 April 1904, commissioned on 7 May 1906, decommissioned on 13 August 1920, for sale on 12 July 1922, handed over to the War Department on 6 August 1923 and sunk while used as a target off the Diamonds Shoals Lightship, Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, USA on 5 September 1923. Displacement of 15.188 (design)-16.352 (full load) tons. The armament consisted of 2x2-30,5cm/12” /40cal guns, 4x2-20,3cm/8” /45cal guns, 12-15,2cm/6” /50 Mark 6 guns, 12-7,6cm/3” /50 cal guns, 12-3pd guns and 4-53,3cm/21” torpedo tubes.
