Italian island Pantellaria strategically of utmost importance according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1937 No. 3

An item referred to the magazine le Yacht dated 27 March 1937 reporting that Italy declared the island Pantellaria and the small islands nearby as exclusion  zone. Pantellaria on a distance of 60 miles from Sicilia and 44 miles from Africa was a very import strategically location and for this reason was it to be fortified. There was a harbour for submarines and aircraft planned.(1)

Note
1. During Operation Corkscrew on 11 June 1943 invaded by the Allies as planned of Operation Husky to invade Sicilia. Pantellaria played an very important part as air base in the last operation.
