Chile not intending to buy merchant German ships according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 9 February 1940
An item dated Santiago de Chile 8th referred to an official statement of the Chilean minister of foreign affairs reporting that the Chilean cabinet not intended to buy German ships lying in Chilean harbours. Its was not allowed under the neutrality law to do is to prevent Germany from obtaining foreign currency. There were rumours that there was an agreement signed between the Chilean and German cabinets that after the war the German ships in Chilean harbours were sold back to Germany.
