Japanese armoured cruiser Yakumo 1897-1947

Preceded by the Izumo-class and succeeded by the Azuma. Building ordered under the so-called Six-Six Fleet program on 1 September 1897, laid down by AG Vulcan Stettin, Stettin, Germany on 1 September 1897, launched on 8 July 1899, completed om 20 June 1900, classified as 1st coastal defence ship since 1 September 1921, as training ship since 1 June 1931, as 1st class since 1 July 1942, stricken on 10 October 1945, used ad reparation transport until June 1946. arrived at the Maizuru shipyard of Hitachi Shipbuilding&Engineering and finally broken up by 1 April 1947. With a displacement of 9.646 tons and as dimensions 132,3 (over all) x 19,57 x 7,21 metres or 434.1 x 64.2 x 23.8 feet. The machinery consisted of 2 vertical triple-expansion engine and 24 Belleville boilers supplying via 2 shafts 15.500 ihp allowing a speed of 20 knots and a range of 7.000 nautical miles with a speed of 20 knots and a cal bunker capacity of 1.300 tons. Her crew numbered 670 men. Armament consisted of 2x2-20,3cm/9. 1” 45 cal Type 41 naval guns, 12x1-15,2cm/6” cal 40 quick firing guns, 12x1-12pd 12 cwt quick firing naval guns, 8x1-3-d quick firing Hotchkiss guns and 5x1-45,7cm/18.0 torpedo tubes. The armour consisted of a 8,9cm3.5”-17,8cm/7.0” thick waterline belt, a 6,3cm/2.5” thick deck, 12,7cm/5.0” thick bulkheads with the gun turrets, barbettes, casemate and coning tower protected by respectively 16cm/6.3”, 15,2cm/6.0”, 5,2cm/2.0”-15,2cm/6.0” and 35,6cm/14.0” thick armour.
