The possible building of mammoth ships in the United Kingdom and USA in 1917

In the meeting of the British War Cabinet on Friday 25 May 1917 reported the First Sea Lord (1) that apparently alone the shipyard Newport News [Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Newport News] in the USA was capable mammoth ships [of 50.000 tons tonnage]. It toke 1,5 year to lay down the necessary plant and then a year to built such mammoth ship. Geddes was examining if British shipyards were able to build such ships and would inform the War Cabinet about the results.

John Jellicoe, 1st Earl Jellicoe (5 December Southampton, England 1859-Kensington London, England 20 November 1935), served in the Royal Navy between 1872-1919 ending his career in the rank of Admiral of the Fleet, First Sea Lord between 30 November 1916 and 10 January 1918 and commanded the Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland in May 1916. Governor-General of New Zealand 27 September 1920-12 December 1924.

2. This must be Sir Eric Campbell Geddes (26 September 1875 British India-22 June 1937), Minister of Transport between 19 May 1919-7 November 1921 and First Lord of the Admiralty between 17 July 1917-10 January 1919.
