American twin screw USS monitor Arkansas (BM-7) 1898-1909 and Ozark 1909-1922

Building ordered on 4 May 1898, awarded on 11 October 1899, laid down by Newport News Shipbuilding, Newport News, Virginia, USA on 14 November 1899, launched on 10 November 1900, handed over on 8 September 1902, commissioned 28 October 1902, renamed Ozark on 2 March 1909, fitted out as submarine tender in 1913. decommissioned on 20 August 1919 and sold to be broken up on 16 January 1902. Of the Arkansas-class, preceded by Monterey-class. Hull number M-7, since 17 July 1920 BM-7.

Displacement 3.277 (standard)-3.410 (full load) tons and as dimensions 77 (waterline)-77,75 (over all) x 15 x 3,81 (mean) metres or 252-255.1 x 50 x 12.6 feet. The 2 vertical triple expansion engines and 4 Thornycroft boilers supplied 1,793 ihp/1,297 kW (trials)-2.400 ihp/1.8 kW allowing a speed of 12,03 (trial)-12m (design) knots. Crew numbered 222 men including 13 officers. The armour was of Harvey steel and consisted of a 13cm/5”-28cm/11” thick belt, a 3,8cm/1.5” thick deck and the barbette, gun turret and conning tower protected by respectively 23cm/9”-28cm/11”, 23cm/9”-25cm/10” and 20cm/8”. The armament consisted of 1x2-30,5cm/12” cal 40 breech loading rifles, 4x1-10,2cm/4” 40 cal guns and 3-5,7cm/2,2”/6 pounder guns.
