Built under the 1867 Naval Program. Of the Kaiser-class ironclads, preceded by Preussen-class and succeeded by Sachsen-class. Laid down by Samuda Brothers, London, England in 1872, launched on 12 September 1874, commissioned on 20 July 1875, rebuilt in 1894-1895, renamed as a hulk on 22 November 1904 Jupiter, stricken in 1906, target ship in 1907, sold in 1908 and broken up at Hamburg-Moorburg, Germany in 1909. Designed by the British naval architect Edward James Reed 20 September 1830-30 November 1906). Outdated when completed due to the turret ship-design. Displacement 7.645 (design)-8.940 (full load) tons and as dimensions 89,34 x 19,1 x 7,39 metres or 293.1 x 62.8 x 24.3 feet. The single expansion steam engine and 8 boilers supplied 5.700ihp allowing a speed of 14,6 knots and a range pf 3.200 nautical miles with a speed of 10 knots. Crew numbered 600 men including 32 officers. The wrought iron armour consisted of a 12,7cm/5”-25,4cm/10” thick belt, a 3,8cm/1.5”-5,1cm/2” deck and with the battery protected by 20,3cm/8”. The armament consisted of 8-26cm/10.2” guns in the casemate and 1-21cm/8.3” gun on the stern: since 1895 were 7-8.8cm/3.5” guns, 4 (later even 12)-3.7cm/1,5” auto cannons and 5-35cm/14” torpedo tubes added.
