British minesweeper HMS Pelorus (J 291) 1942-1947 (South African Pietermaritzburg 1947-1994)

Part of the Algerine-class, preceded by Bangor-class, succeeded by Ton-class. Building ordered on 1 January 1942, laid down by Lobnitz, Renfrew, Scotland on 8 October 1942, launched on 18 June 1943, commissioned on 7 October 1943, decommissioned in May 1946, sold to South Africa in 1946, renamed Pietermaritzburg on 21 January 1948, stricken in 1991, scuttled on 12 November 1994 and nowadays accessible as diving wreck. Displacemen 1.047 (standard)-1.346 (deep load) tons and as dimensions 68,6 (over all) x 10,8 x 3,7 metres) or 225 x 35.6 x 12.3 feet. The 2 vertical triple expansion steam engines and 2 Admiralty 3-drum boilers supplied via 2 shafts 2.400ihp allowing a speed of 16,5 knots and with 10 knots speed a range of 5.000 nautical miles. Crew numbered 85 men. Armament consisted of 1-10,2cm/4” Mk V quick firing dual purpose gun and 4x1-2cm/o.8” Oerlikon anti aircraft guns.
