An item referred to the publication Susa Novykh Tipoc dlya Bol’shoy Volgi, written by A.P. Strakhov, Moscow 1954 dealing with new kind of ships to serve on the Volga. The river channel would in the future be changed caused by constructing of hydroelectric power projects and corresponding attendant reservoirs. So in this manner were new types of river ships needed including several types of screw steam and diesel tugs. The new tugs were be stronger and their propulsion more economical despite it were vertical steam engines or internal combustion diesel engines.
One type was the 600bhp twin screw diesel steel tug with as dimensions 37,2 (between perpendiculars)-40,3 (over all) x 7,40 (moulded) x 3,0 (depth amidships) x 1,8 (mean draught with full fuel load) metres. The machinery consisted of 2-300hp diesels allowing a towing capacity at hook of 7.000 kilo with a speed of 8 kilometres. Speed without tow was 18 kilometres. The building of this type using a design of the Central Design Bureau at the Krasnoye Sormovo Plant imeni A.A. Zhdanov started in 1948. Hull completely welded instead of riveting. Hull was built out of enclosed and flat sections using transverse system framing. Superstructure containing personnel accommodation (6 officers and 15 sailors) and service compartments was similar constructed of 3mm thick metal. The main engines drove directly the screws while auxiliary engines were available for generator and compressors. Auxiliary engines and equipment like windlass and towing winch were electrified. USSR Register Division O demands including light ice service. This type tugs was also active on the rivers Ob, Tenisey. Lena and Pechora. They went under own power using the Arctic route to their destination.
