British destroyer HMS Whiting underway to Mirs Bay according to the Dutch newspaper De Sumatra Post dated 8 April 1899

An item dated Singapore 5th April reported that the British destroyer HMS Whiting with on board 100 men of the Welsh fusiliers went from Hong Kong towards Mirs Bay Tai Pang Wan, South Chinese Sea]. The soldiers had to assist the British police in Kowloon which was attacked by Chinese citizens.(1)

1. Building ordered under the Naval Estimates 1895-1896, laid down by Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Company, Jarrow-on-Tyne on 13 April 1896, launched on 26 August 1896, commisdioned in June 1897, laid up in the reserve in 1919 and finally sold to be broken up at Hong Kong on 27 November 1919.
