Japanese cargo ship (ex-Shunten Maru 1928-1938) Syunten Maru 1928-1944

 

Call sign JCAC. Gross tonnage 5.623 tons, under deck 5.210 tons, net tonnage 4.137 tons and as dimensions 405.0 x 55.0 x 32.0 x 8 (light)-25.6 (loaded) feet. Built by Mitsubishi Zosen Kaisen Ltd., Nagasaki, Japan for Yamamoto Shoji K.K.,Osaka, Japan. Laid down on 18 January 1928, launched on 20 June 1928, completed on 6 August 1928. requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Navy on 15 October 1941 as an auxiliary transport and sunk by the American submarine USS Gunnel around 130 miles east of Tourane, French Indochina [nowadays Da Nang, Viernma] with passengers and loaded with 8.010 ton heavy oil on 17 November 1944. Oil fuelled diesel machinery supplying via a single screw 582 nhp/2.350 bhp allowing a speed of 10.5 (normal)-13 (maximum) knots. With a oil bunker capacity including deep tanks of 1.788 tons and 10.5 knots speed a range of 40.000 nautical miles. Designed as lumber carrier although intelligence manuals suggested that she carried oil in bulk.
