Italian destroyer Luca Tarigo 1927-1941

Laid down by Ansaldo, Genoa, Italy on 30 August 1927, launched on 9 December 1928, commissioned on 16 November 1929 and sunk in a battle on 16 April 1941 off the Tunisian coast with the British destroyers HMS Jervis (1), Janus (2), Nubian (3) and Mohawk (4).

General specifications. Of the Navigatore-class, succeeded by Turbine-class and succeeded by Freccia-class, developed as an answer on the French Jaguar and Guépard-classes. With a displacement of 2.125 (standard)-2.599 (normal)-2.830 (full load) tons and as dimensions 107.28 x 10.2 x 3.4 metres or 352.0 x 33.6 x 11.2 feet. Her machinery consisted of 2 geared steam turbines and 4 water tube boilers supplied via 2 shafts 55.000 hp allowing a speed of 38 knots and a range of 800 respectively 3.800 nautical miles with a speed of 38 respectively 15 knots. Crew numbered 173 (including 9 officers)-225 men. Armament consisted of 3x2-12cm/4.7” guns, 2x1-4cm/1.6” anti aircraft guns. 4x2-13.2mm/0.52” machine guns and 2x3-53.3cm/21” torpedo tubes and 54 mines and 14 depth charges.

Part of J-class Flotilla leaders, preceded by Tribal-class, succeeded by L and M-classes, laid down by Hawthorn Leslie and Company Ltd., Hebburn-on-Tyne, England on 26 August 1937, launched on 9 September 1938, commissioned on 8 May 1939, decommissioned in May 1946 and sold to be broken up in 1954. Displacement 1.720 (standard)-2.370 (full load tons), speed 36 knots, main armament 3x2-12cm/4.7” guns and 2x5-53,3cm/21” torpedo tubes.

2. F53. Part of J-class Flotilla leaders, preceded by Tribal-class, ordered on 25 March 1937 under 1936 Programme, succeeded by L and M-classes, laid down by Swan Hunter, Tyne and Wear, England on 29 September 1937, launched on 10 November 1938, commissioned on 15 August 1939 and sunk during a German air attack on 23 January 1944 off Anzio, Italy.

3. L36 later F36. Part of Tribal-class destroyers, preceded by I-class, succeeded by J-class. ordered on 10 March 1936, laid down by Thornycroft, Woolston, Southampton, England on 10 August 1936, launched on 21 December 1937, commissioned on 1 December 1938 and sold to be broken up on 11 June 1949. Displacement  1/921 (standard)-2.559 (deep load) tons, speed 36 knots and main armament 4x2-12cm/4.7” guns and 1x4-53,3cm/21” torpedo tubes.

4. L31 later F31 and G31. Part of Tribal-class destroyers, preceded by I-class, succeeded by J-class. ordered on 10 March 1936, laid down by Thornycroft, Woolston, Southampton, England on 16 July 1936, launched on 5 October 1938, commissioned on 9 September 1939 and sunk by the Italian destroyer Luca Tarigo on 16 April 1941 off the Tunisian coast.
