Greek cruiser Elli torpedoed by submarine according to the Dutch newspaper Bataviaasch nieuwsblad dated 16 August 1940

An item dated Athens, Greece 15th referred to an official statement reporting that the same morning the Greek 2.115 tons cruiser Helle was torpedoed by an unknown submarine while she was lynching anchored on a half mile distance of the quay on the island Tinos, Aegean Sea. There were 31 wounded or dead crew members.(1)

1.The protected cruiser Elli, laid down by New York Shipbuilding, USA as the Fei Hong part of the Chinese Chao Ho-class on 14 June 1911, launched on 9 May 1912,, order cancelled due to the revolution in China in 1912-1913, completed in November 1913, to Greece in 1914 and sunk off the Tinos harbour on 15 August 1940 when she was hit by torpedoes fired by an Italian submarine. Main armament 3x1-15.3cm/6” guns.
