American whaler Joseph Meigs burned by fire according to the newspaper American Republican and Baltimore Daily Clipper dated Thursday 2 July 1846

An item reported that on Saturday night the American whaler Joseph Meigs with her cargo of 1.000 barrels oil was lost by fire while lying at Mattapoisett. The fire broke out at 11 o’clock o.o. but all efforts to extinguish were doomed and she burned to the water’s edge before sinking. She belonged to Joseph Meigs of Mattapoisett arriving on 19 and just partly unloaded. The insurance of the ship was expired but her cargo of oil was insured at the local offices.
