Japanese tanker Akatuki Maru or Akatsuki Maru1938-1943

Laid down by Harima Shipbuilding and Engineering, Aioi, Japan with yard number 255 for Nippon Kaiun K.K. on 31 June 1937, launched on 20 August 1938, completed on 1 October 1938, chartered by the Japanese Imperial Navy as refueling ship on 17 November 1941, converted into an auxiliary oiler, torpedoed by the American submarine USS Saury (SS-189) on 28 May 1943 720 miles north west of Naha, Okinawa and sunk the next day and stricken on 30 June 1943.

Gross register tonnage 10.216 ton and as dimensions 505 (between perpendiculars) x 65 x 11 (light)-29.6 (loaded) feet. One screw. Diesel machinery with an oil bunker capacity of 1.800 tons allowing a range of 20.000 nautical miles/17 knots. Speed 17 (cruising)-20 (maximum) knots. Oil carrying capacity 110.000 barrels (42 galleons). Armed with 1-12cm/4.7” LA gun.
