Dutch Greenland whalers Gerechtigheyd and Botterton captured by the French according to the Dutch newspaper Amsterdamse courant dated 4 September 1703

An item dated Amsterdam, Netherlands 3 September reported the arrival a day earlier on the Maas of the Dutch Greenland whaler Gerechtigheyd. Her crew reported that she left the ice on 26 July on 75½ degrees with the Dutch Greenland whaler Botterton and a whaler from Bremen, Germany. On 28 July they came across French warships and privateers including 1-68 and 1-56 gun ships, all showing Dutch flags and signalling with gun shots. When they came nearer the Dutch flags were replaced by French flags. The Geregtigheyd was to pay 10,000 Dutch guilders for her release. The Botterton was set into fire. Five of her crew members went in board of the Geregtigheyd, the remaining on board of the German whaler who was allowed to go. (1)
