British anti submarine frigate HMS Wrangler was transferred to South Africa according to the Australia Station Intelligence Summary dated 1 March 1957

An item reported that the British anti submarine frigate HMS Wrangler was transferred to South Africa and on 29 November [1956] commissioned as S.A.S. Vrystaat. She was the first of the ships to be acquired by the South African Navy under the agreement of June 1955 dealing with the Simonstown Base and expanding the naval strength. Built as a destroyer in 1944 and converted into a fast submarine frigate in 1951. In the Second World War present by operations off Norway, Milos [Greece?] and Sumatra, Indonesia and the surrender of Japan.

Pennant F157, laid down by Vickers-Armstrong Ltd., Barrow-in-Furness, England on 23 September 1942, launched on 30 December 1943, completed on 14 July 1944 as a fleet destroyer, converted between 1951-1952 by Harland&Wolff Ltd., Belfast, builat as a W-class destroyer, preceded by U and V-classes and succeeded by C-class.
