An item reported that the building of 2 Whitby-class frigates for the Royal New Zealand Navy was ordered by Messrs. J.I. Thornycroft, Southampton [England] and Messrs. White, Cowes [Wight]. Expectation was a launching in October respectively December and to be commissioned and depart for New Zealand mid 1960.(1)

1. According to Jane’s Fighting Ships 1961-1962 the Rothesay-class anti submarine frigates Taranaki (F148) launched at Wight on 19 August 1959 completed on 28 March 1961 and the Otago (F111) launched at Southampton on 11 December 1958, completed on 22 June 1960.
