Laid down by John Brown&Company, Clydebank, Scotland on 30 June 1937, launched on 11 August 1938, commissioned on 14 May 1939, modernized as support ship for nuclear submarines 1962-1966, decommissioned on 1 January 1979 and sold to be broken up on 25 July 1985. At Defiance she served as a torpedo training school 1972-1978. Displacement 9,043-13,000 (full load) tons and as dimensions 151.5 (between perpendiculars)-161.8 (overall) x 22.3 x 6.5 metres or 497-531.0 x 73 x 21.2 feet. Speed 16-17 knots. Crew numbered 695 men, accommodation for 1,159 men. Armament consisted of 4x2-11cm/4.5” dual purpose guns and 2x4-2 pd anti aicraft guns.
