Japanese whale factory ship (ex-Opawa 1906-1928, Antarctic 1928-1934, Antarctic Maru 1934-1935) Tonan Maru 1935-1943

Call sign JRQJ. Built by Denny W.&Brothers Ltd., Dumbarton, Scotland as a cargo ship in 1906, converted into a whale factory in 1928 and torpedoed and sunk by the USS submarine Bowfin (SS-287) on 28 November 1943. United Kingdom-flagged 1906-1928 and Norway-flagged 1928-1934. Gross tonnage 9,866 tons, under deck 6,841 tons, net tonnage 5,988 tons, deadweight 12,762 tons and as dimensions 460.4 x 60.2 x 31.2 x 13 (light)-31 (loaded) feet. Reciprocating propulsion, 943 nhp, 1,200 tons coal bunker capacity, range 6,500 miles/11 knots and speed 11 (normal cruising)-12 (maximum) knots.
