Russian naval force sighted underway to the La Perouse (Soya) Straits according to the Australia Station Intelligence Summary dated 1 December 1956

Sverdlov-class cruiser

An item reported that a group of Soviet warships including two Sverdlov-cruisers, 2 Riga-class destroyer escorts and six Kronstadt anti submarine vessels were seen early October heading west through the La Perouse (Soya) Straits. Probably all ships belonged to the group which was transferred from the Northern Fleet to the Pacific Fleet using the Northern Sea Route. Another possibility that some ships already served in the Soviet Far East but sent to welcome the new ships.
