Enemy submarine active near Esperance, Australia according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 6 August 1942

An item reported that an Allied merchant ship was shellled by an enemy submarine around 180 nautical miles southeast of Esperance, Australia. The J.I.C. commented that ships on routes to the east, southeast and west of Australia were numerous attacked but this was the first time on the coastal trade routes to the south.
