Designed by the Director of Naval Construction 1863-1870 Sir Edward James Reed (20 September 1830 Sheerness-30 November 1906 London) in 1872 for Brazil and to be named Independencia a masted version of the HMS Devastation, laid down by J.&W. Dudgeon, Cubitt Town, England in 1873, launched on 10 September 1874, acquired by the British government in February-March 1878, modified to suit the Royal Navy conditions, completed on 3 September 1881, commissioned on 28 March 1883 and sold to be broken up on 15 September 1903.
