Part of Emerald-class composite screw steam corvettes designed by chief constructor of the Royal Navy (1872-1885) Sir Nathaniel Barnaby (25 February 1829 Chatham-16 June 1915 London) preceded by HMS Rover succeeded by Bacchante-classs. Laid down under the 1874-1875 Programme by Earle’s Shipbuilding, Hull, England on 8 July 1874, launched on 22 April 1876, completed on 13 September 1876 and sold to be broken up on 24 September 1892.
