James, 3 January 1823 Bolton, England-14 November 1905 Shrivenham, England. Enigineer and draughtsman most famous for his self-popelled naval torpedo. His firm Whitehead&Co. was later sold to Vickers and Armstrong-Whitworth. At Fiume (nowadays Rijeka, Croatia) was a torpedoe and shipfactory established where submarines were built, partly with the aid of Dutch laborers.
