Danish cargo ship Tongking 1914-1938 (1941)

Call sign OZPB. Launched by Akt. Burmeister&Wain, Copenhagen, Denmark on 26 August 1914 for A/S De Ostasiatiske Kompagni, Copenhagen, Denmark, sunk when fire broke out on board on 2 April 1938 loaded with copra, copra cakes, rice etc. underway from Osaka, Japan towards Rotterdam, Netherlands. The Dutch newspaper De Indische courant dated 11 April 1938 reported that the fire broke out on Saturday morning and she was still burning on Monday evening, started slowly sunking and expected to burn for another 4-5-days. Scheepvaart dated 29 June 1938 reported that she was sold to be broken up. De Maasbode dated 5 April 1939 mentioned that she sunk off Penang, Malacca underway from Japan towards Rotterdam, Netherlands, refloated by a Japanese salvagae company and expected to arrive on 1 April at Kobe. The damage was far less than expected and she could serve several decades. Mentioned in a letter dated 12 October 1939 that she was refloated but still unknown if she was to be repaired or broken up. She was at that moment towed to Osaka for her new owners. Kyoei Shokai of Kobe was to repaire her. On 24 March 1941 still lying unrepaired at Osaka. Archive Lloyd’s Register Foundation. Oil fuelled diesel propulsion, twin screw, horsepower 717nhp and speed 11 (normal cruising) knots.
