American merchant ship ss Florence Luckenbach torpedoed and sunk by an enemy submarine according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 30 January 1942

An item reported that on 27 January 1942 the ss Florence Luckenbach was torpedoed and sunk by an enemy submarine around 24 miles east south east of Madras, India. The J.I.C. commented that this was one of the two first indications of enemy submarine activities in that area.(1)
