An item referred to the Western Defense Command reporting that 32 survivors in 2 life boats of the ss Emidio were saved. Her master stated that on 20 December 1:35 PST a enemy submarine first shelled his ship and that she then was hit by a torpedo astern. The Emidio was abandoned by 3 of the 5 lowered lifeboats were destroyed with gunfire by the submarine. The Emidio was last seen afloat but low in the water. The J.I.C. commented that the USN was ordered to sent ships for searching for survivors and if possible salvaging.(1)

1. Ex-Hammac 1921-1923. Ordered on 30 April 1918, laid down with yard number 5274 by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Potreto on 30 November 1920, launched on 25 May 1921, completed in July 1921. Of Socony-Vacuum Oil Co. Torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on 20 December 1941. Broken up on the rocks off Crescent City. Her bow was salvaged in 1950.
