An item reported that the USA-flagged merchant ship USAT Ludington underway to Canton Island to evacuate civilians and last heard from on 7 December was considered to be lost while she was so long overdue.(1)

Laid down as the cargo ship ss James Otis by Pusey&Jones, Gloucester, New Jersey for account of the USSB on 14 January 1920, launched on 24 July 1920, completed and delivered in August 1920, handed over to the US Army Transport Service on 1 May 1931, renamed USAT Ludington on 1 August 1931, assigned to the navy in 1941, hull number AK-37, never commisssioned, assignment cancelled on 30 May 1942. Laid up on 18 February 1947 and sold to be broken up on 22 July 1947.
