British cargo ship ss Empire Kingfisher lost according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 29 January 1942

An item reported that the British s.s. Empire Kingfisher sunk on 19 January 4 miles south of Cape Sable after striking a submerged object which exploded.(1)

Note

1. Cargo ship Design 1015 launched as Coaxet for the United States Shipping Board by G.M. Standifer Construction Company, Vancouver, Washington on 27 February 1919, transferred to the British Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Kingfisher in 1941, strike a submerged object on 18th January 4 miles off Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia, sinking next day. It was long thought that she was hit by a torpedo of the German submarine U-109.
