Large number of German submarines active in the North Atlantic according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 27 January 1942

An item reported that there seemed to be between 40-50 German submarines active in the North Atlantic scattered over the principal trade routes as 8 in our coastal waters and west of Bermuda, 12-15 in the Cape Race area, 6-7 west or southwest of Ireland, 1 west or southwest of Iceland, 4-5 between Iceland and Rockall, 8-10 in the general vicinity of the Azores, 2-3 west of Gibraltar and 1-2 east or north east of Madeira. Some were outward bound others returning to their bases.
