An item reported that during the night an American destroyer squadron attacked a Japanese convoy off Balikpapan, Dutch East Indies scoring 5-6 torpedo hits and a number of close-range shell hits. One large Japanese ship blew up, a second one sunk and one was seen hevaily listing. One American destroyer was slightly damaged by a shell hit. The J.I.C. commented that it was presumably the same Japanese convoy attacked by Dutch aircraft as described in the summary dated 24 January. Then were 4 respectively 8 direct hits scored on warships respectively transports. The convoy consisted of 4 cruisers, 12 destroyers and 15 transports presumably aiming an invasion on Balikpapan.
