Enemy submarines active along American-Canadian east coast line according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 19 January 1942

An item reported that in the pas 24 hours enemy submarines were particularly active off the Delaware and Virginia Capes with sinking 3 merchant ships and making numerous contacts. Submarines were also sighted off New York, Boston and Portland. A large number of submarines threatened the convoy routes south and southeasy of Newfoundland, Canada.
