Enemy submarines taxing salvage facilities to the utmost according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 20 January 1942

An item referred to J.I.C. comments reporting that the activities of enemy submarines off the Atlantic Coast was unabated especially in the vicinity of Cape Hatteras and off Newfoundland. Although the reported number of ships sunk was not alarming, the salvage facilities were taxed to the utmost. Frequently were collisions caused by the darkening of ships during the nights and dimming of their navigational lights. The recent gale in the North Atlantic complicated the situation with foundered or badly damaged ships.
