Axis submarines threatening British operations in the Mediterranean according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 8 January 1942

An item reported that enemy submarines continued operating in the Eastern Mediterranean especially on the British Alexandria [Egypt-Cyrenaica [Greece] supply route and in the Aegean Sea south of the Dardanelles. The British R.A.F. in the meantime attacked with all limited means Axis air and submarine bases to prevent a major attack on the British Mediterranean Fleet.
