Part of a sub-class of the Cameron-class ships with identical dimensions numbering 11 ships consisting of Clan Forbes, Clan Buchanan, Clan Cameron, Clan Campbell, Clan Chattan, Clan Cumming, Clan Ferguson, Clan Fraser, Clan Lamont, Clan Menzies, and HMS Engadine, the latter was to be named Clan Buchanan. Launched by Greenock Dockyard Co., River Clyde, Greenock, Scotland with yard number 434 on 8 September 1938, completed in December 1938 and broken up at Hong Kong in 1959. In the Second World War temporarily disguised as the British submarine depot ship HMS Maidstone and for this purpose fitted out with a dummy funnel.
