An item reported that unseen warships probably Japanese fired at several targets in the Hawaiian area. On 30 December 1941 8 round at Hilo slightly damaging the pier, The Hulbert (1) returned one round. On 31 December 1941 5 rounds on Kahului Harbor, Maui without any damage and a few rounds on Nawiliwili, Kauai seting a cane field on fire. There were no personal casualties during these attacks.

Laid down by Norfolk Navy Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia, USA on 18 November 1918, launched on 28 June 1919, commisssioned on 27 October 1920, laid up in reserve since 17 October 1934, converted into a seaplane tender, recommissioned as AVD-6 on 2 August 1940, decommissioned on 2 November 1945, stricken on 28 November 1945 and sold to be broken up on 31 October 1946.
