Sea elephanting grounds off Patagonian coast 1803-1820

An item reported that sea elephant oil or a mix of sea elephant seal oil furnished a large part of the oil traded on the American markest during the past 80 years. Until 1803 was the oil shipped by whalers from whalers from active in the extreme South Atlantic and by fur sealers active off Falkland, South Georgia and the coast of Patagonia. In 1803 was an ship especially fitted out at New Bedford for sea elephant hunting off the Patagonian coast returning in 1804 fully loaded. Until 1820 was she followed by a large numbers of ships especially fitted out at New London sent towards this destination for this purpose.
