An item reported that a Japanese naval force consisting of 5 cruisers, 9 destroyers and 25 transports was sighted on 26 February 04.00 G.C.T. in the Java Sea, Dutch East Indies moving to the south. According to the press was a large scale naval battle in progress off Java between the Alllied and Japanese naval forces although details were lacking.(1)

1. Battle of the Java Sea on 27 February between by the ABDA fleet commanded by the Dutch rear admiral Karel Doorman and the Japanese followed by the Battle of the Sunda Strait on 8 February and the Second Battle of the Java Sea on 1 March. Allied forces included five cruisers HMS Execeter, HMAS Perth, USS Houston and Hr.Ms. De Ruyter and Java.
