US Navy icebreaker USS Atka bound for the Antarctic according to the Australia Station Intelligence Summary dated7 January 1955

An item reported that the US Navy icebreaker USS Atka was scheduled to leave Boston, USA on 1 December bound for the Antarctic and to gather information for the expedition planned in 1957. She would probably stay 10 weeks in the Antarctic.

1. Laid down by Western Pipe and Steel Company, San Pedro, California, USA with yard number CG-98 as the Wind-class icebreaker USCGC Southwind on 20 July 1942, launched on 8 March 1943, commissioned on 15 July 1944, decommissioned on 23 March 1945, transferred to the USSR on 25 March 1945, renamed Admiral Makarov, returned on 28 December 1949, became the USS Atka, commissioned on 13 April 1950, decommissioned on 31 October 1966, returned to the USCG , renamed USCGC Southwind, decommisssioned on 31 May 1974 and sold to be broken up on 17 March 1976.
