An item reported that in the week 7-14 December 1939 in the Western Approaches just two merchant ships were lost despite the presumed presence of 2 or more German submarines. The British merchant ship ss Brandon was part of a convoy when she was torpedoed and sunk. (1) From the air and by a destroyer escort was the submarine attacked although with unknown results.

1. The Dutch newspaper Het volksdagblad dated 11 December 1939 reported that the 6,668 tons Brandon sunk off the British west coast after she was torpedoed. The Limburger koerier dated 11 December wrote that her crew numbered 43 men of which 9 were killed. Torpedoed by the German submarine U-48 on 8 December 1939 around 120 miles west of Lands End underway from Cardiff to Port Everglades, Florida, USA.
