Preceded by Baden-Württemberg-class. The Niedersachsen is to be commissioned in 2028. Until 1 January 12021 was the project known as MKS 180 or Multi-Purpose Combat Ship 180. Originally to be built by Rheinmetall German Navy Yards with the Dutch Damen Naval as supervisor, this role lost Damen Naval end 2025. Contract signed on 17 June 2020 for the first 4 ships and for the additional 2 on 19 June 2024. Displacement 10,550 tonnes and as dimensions 166 x 21.7 x 5.9 metres or 544.7 x 71.2 x 104 feet.
