British guided missile destroyer HMS Southampton (D 90) 1976-


Ordered 17 March 1976, laid down at Vosper Thornycroft Limited, Woolston 21 October 1976, launched 29 June 1979, commissioned 31 October 1981 and decommissioned 12 February 2009. Her homeport was Portsmouth. Nicknamed ‘The Mighty Ninety’ referring to her pennant. Her motto was Pro judicious pro Rege. A Type D 42 destroyer Batch 2with as displacement 4,820 tons (other sources 3,500 long tons standard, 4,100 long tons  or 4,350 tons full load) and dimensions 127 x 14,3m.(other sources 119,5 (waterline)-125 (0ver all) x 14,3 x 4,2 (keel)-5,8m (screws). Her engines with 25,000 shop and 5,000 shp allowed a speed of 30 knots. Her crew numbered 287 men. Armed with a Lynx HMA8 helicopter, 1-4.5” gun and Sear Dart SAM missiles. According to another source 1-4.5”gun, 2X4 20mm guns, 2 x Phalanx and 2x3 torpedo tubes. Estimated building cost were £67,500,000.
