American steamships Hibernia and Caledonia bought by Spanish Government in 1850

For years was in the Netherlands a magazine published dealing with maritime affairs. It published in 1857 a news item, originally published in the Nautical Magazine dated November 1850, p. 637. According to this item was the Spanish government bought ‘recently’ the two American steam ships Hibernia and Caledonia for 840.000 Dutch guilders. The excellent engineer of the Thames, Mr. Penn, valued the ships at Liverpool, England.
