The British naval strength according to the Dutch newspaper Zierikzeesche Courant dated 30 July 1884

The British navy consisted on 1 January of 28 armed ships in service and 14 in reserve, 9 being fitted out, 4 being repaired, 7 being build, totally 62 units; there were 122 unarmed ships and 39 in reserve, 25 being fitted out, 21 waiting for repairs and 14 being build, totally 221; further more 74 torpedo boats, 4 being build and 2 3rd class gunboats, and 11 vessels for the coastal waters being repaired but which were excluded from the mentioned number.
