The French squadron commanded by Gallois consisting of 3 ships of the line and a brig departed 18 July Tripoli towards Tunis. The French brig of war le Cuirassier departed 12 June Vera Cruz and brought with her tidings dealing with the French squadron commanded by captain Bazoche which blockaded the coasts of Mexico. The ships were in the best possible condition and the crews excellent but after a court martial it was clear that the squadron was too small to attack with success the castle of S. Juan de Ulloa. They French officers hoped that the Mexican government would negotiate with the French government within short time. For this purpose was the French consul Deffaudis returned to French on board of the le Cuirassier. Deffaudes was blamed for causing the problems between both countries.
