The local Dutch newspaper a news item dealing with the strength of the French navy on 1 January a year earlier. The item was earlier published in the magazine of Le Havre. The state didn’t mention the ships which were to aged, just the ships which were in active service at sea or laid up in the harbours but still in good condition/useful. There were 27 ships of the line of which 8 of the 1st rate officially armed with 120 but practical with 142 guns, 35 frigates of which 14 with 60 guns, 21 corvettes armed with 20-32 guns, 30 brigs armed with 16-20 guns, 23 advice brigs armed with 10 guns and 117 goelettes, cutters, gunboats, transport etc. and there were 17 government steamboats, mostly of 150-279 hp. Totally 279 ships and vessels available for practical service. On stocks were 26 ships of the line, 28 frigates, 3 corvettes, 7 transports and 8 steamships. Added this ships/vessels to the strength would give a total number of 351 ships and vessels.
