For years was in the Netherlands a magazine published dealing with maritime affairs. It published in 1857 a news item, originally published in the Times. According to this item sent from Genoa 16 September was the intention to increase or improve the Sardinian navy. The material available for the sailing vessels was no longer of any use and so the government decided to rebuilt the sailing ships as screw steamships. The newly built ships Carlo Alberto, Victorio Emmanuele and Constituzione were to be joined within short time by the Marie Adelaide and the Duca de Genova, both still on stocks and 4 other screw steam frigates of 50 guns, to be built at Newcastle, England.
