Chinese river gunboat Wei Ning 1933-1960's


A river gunboat with as sister ship the Yi Ning. Launched on 10 October 1933 at the Shanghai Dockyard. With a displacement of 300 tons were her dimensions 140 (over all) x 20 x 6’. Her speed was 10 knots. The crew numbered 44 men and she was armed with 2-6pdr guns and 3 machineguns. This details are supplied by Jane’s Fighting Ships edition 1944/1945.  Conway’s All the world fighting ships 1922-1946 mentioned a standard displacement of 400 tons and as dimensions 142’9” (between perpendiculars) x 22’11”x 6’7” and said that she was part of the Ning-class patrol boats consisting of 11 units armed with 2x1-5,7cm guns, a crew which numbered 44 men and one triple expansion engine with one coal-fired boiler supplying 600 ihp allowing a speed of 10 knots. The Wei Ning was captured by the Japanese forces and commissioned as the Bunsei in Japanese naval service but recaptured by Allied forces. Sunk in 199 but salvaged was she again commissioned in Chinese naval service until the 1960’s.
